Thank You Rain!

It has been really dry the past month or so, and we are just now getting our new irrigation system set up. That means, plants have been stressed due to lack of water.  Most vegetables grow fine under these conditions, but onions really want water every day!  The bulbs have been growing slowly.  With our recent rain they are looking much happier, and should now begin the catchup game!

Abundance at Small Step!

The Produce List we e-mail to chefs and grocery stores each week is lengthening.  Not only are there herbs (parsley, cilantro, thyme, oregano, sage, lemon balm) and greens (salad mix, head lettuce, spinach, arugula, kale, chard) but there are now new potatoes, carrots, beets, cabbages, radishes, and finally.......tomatoes are starting to ripen!
This year we have our tomato house at the farm, and we are also selling tomatoes from a new greenhouse that Asa and I put up at home in Roxbury.  So, soon enough, there will be tomatoes galore!  Almost all heirloom too.  Cherokee Purple, Indigo Rose, Black Krim, Brandywine, Green Zebra, Valencia, the list goes on! My new favorite, that I've been eating at home every day, is Moskvich-  delicious deep red heirloom.

Savoy Cabbage

There is currently a lot of brassicas happening at the farm, perhaps a bit too much! We are actually considering tilling in half our kale and chard because of over planting (oops) and it's just yielding so well!  So, if you want to come reap a harvest before we till....come on down.

It is definitely time to start preserving sauerkraut, kimchi (we also have loads of daikon radish), sweet purple cabbage and any other cabbage recipe you can find!  Some cabbage is best eaten fresh, such as this tender baby savoy cabbage.  We will have them all at the farmer's market this Saturday- red and green cabbage, savoy and napa!

Yummy Radishes!

Wash, slice, saute' with butter or evoo, and serve over your favorite grain!  Eat raw in salads.  Use daikon to preserve as pickles or kimchi!

Baby Veggies

Small Step has been harvesting all sorts of baby veggies for local restaurants and the farmers market.   Carrots, beets, potatoes, summer squashes, hericot vert, head lettuces, fennel- all desired in the smaller size!

The Cooler is Now!

Thank you for all the support for our event, Cooler Now!  We had a great turnout for music, food, raffle and art auction.  We raised enough money to begin building the cooler!  It will take just a few days to have it up and running!  It's attached to our wash station/shed for easy access after harvest and wash and will be run using a LG air conditioner and Coolbot.  Easy to understand, maintain and low cost!
